Redpath refurbished a vacant wing of Murchison House to form five electrical labs for the University of Edinburgh, in support of the new Regius Chair appointment and establishment of the Centre for Electronics Frontiers.
This project involved structural alterations, builder work, (concrete plinth for compressor housing unit) installation of laboratory gases (Nitrogen and Oxygen) and specialist laboratory benching (five probe stations), wall and floor finishes (anti-static vinyl), installation of complex M&E services (HVAC, data, smoke and fire) and specialist lighting with full integration into the university’s BMS system.
Murchison House was operational during our works. Noise had to be kept to a minimum, particularly whilst exams were in progress with any noisy work only being permitted before 9am. We provided a weekly ‘look ahead’ programme based on what, when and where site activities to manage all expectations and deploy appropriate mitigation techniques where required.
We also shared a lift with building users to get larger materials up to our site. We protected the lift in Correx and all material lifts were accompanied by our banksman to ensure the 20m travel from the lift was achieved safely.
Our materials had to be moved by hand up two flights of stairs and then into communal corridors. Keeping corridors clear and clean and minimising noise were our main priorities with this activity. The five rooms being converted required an AHU and a window being replaced with a louvre. This activity had to be done from the outside from a scaffold designed to mirror the unusual shape of the façade.
We installed exposed services which required more complex programming with décor finishing required prior to services installation. The attention to detail for services install to ensure correct placement and extreme neatness was paramount.
