Redpath carried out the alteration and extension of Caroline Cottage.
Harmeny Education Trust is a charitable organisation, providing a range of high-quality services in the areas of care, education, outdoor learning and staff development. Their core service – Harmeny School – offers specialist education services for children aged 5 to 14 who have complex social emotional and behavioural needs, with children being referred by local authorities throughout Scotland.
Harmeny Education Trust has extended their support to young people beyond the age of 14 by renovating one of their residential cottages, Caroline Cottage which is based on their campus in Balerno. It has enabled their residential capacity to increase from 24 to 29.
This project has provided five larger bedrooms with en-suite facilities, staff office accommodation, independent laundry provision, upgraded kitchen facilities and social/dining space.
The works consisted of the alteration and erection of a single storey extension along with reconfigured internal partitions to create the five en-suite bedrooms (one with an accessible shower). Alterations to the games room storage and staff sleepover room has provided laundry and storage cupboards. The finishes include M&E, new windows, doors, vinyl flooring, carpeting, and decoration.
The extension itself infills the area between the cottage and the adjacent music room which had a 4m wide gap. We partially removed the gable wall and installed a timber kit infill with white rendering system and tiled roof to match the existing. This area has provided an extra bedroom, toilet facility and new entrance to the building with wheelchair accessible ramp.
Landscaping to the front of the building included works to remove the existing path, old decking and fencing and lay new slabs and extend the front garden area by 9m into ‘Caroline Field’ with a new larch timber picket fence.
